Ocean

Case Study

Ocean proudly picked up two awards for ‘Excellence in Environmental Training’ and Outstanding Commitment to Training for an SME award at the Cornwall College Business Excellence in Business Training Awards ceremony, held at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay.

Since its establishment in 2000, Ocean has invested approximately £200 million in the county, building new houses and improving existing homes for around 4,000 families. Four companies make up the Ocean Housing Group. They are Ocean Housing Group Ltd, Ocean Housing Ltd, Ocean Services Ltd and Gilbert & Goode Ltd. Services they provide vary from providing homes and services for local families, property maintenance and repair service and also refurbishment.

Ocean recognised that they have a duty of care to the environment and are keen to develop green projects and initiatives across the business. As a result of this they have worked in partnership with Cornwall College Business to train and develop their trade workforce in specific green technologies. They also provided Environmental Awareness in the Workplace training for 160 of its 240 workforce.  This training has provided staff with an understanding of environmental issues.  All of Ocean’s employees are now more aware of how their work practices can impact on the environment and how they may positively adapt their working practices for the benefit of the environment.

Phil Smith, Managing Director Ocean Services (SW) Ltd said “We have worked in partnership with Cornwall College Business to train and develop our staff in the latest green technologies and environmental awareness. The result of this has enabled the company to open up to a whole new market and there is also the potential for gaining significantly more contracts in the future”.

The company can now install a new generation of heating systems using the latest technologies, from solar thermal and ground source heat pumps to Solar photovoltaic’ s. Solar photovoltaic’s are already integral to the new £5.7m eco-friendly housing development at Prince Charles House in St Austell which is to be completed within the next 12 months, ensuring it is energy efficient, warm and comfortable for all the supported residents who will live there.  In addition, Ocean now installs air and ground source heating systems into its new build properties.

Due to Ocean’s commitment, they have now been awarded with the International Standards Organisation (ISO) 14001 accreditation for environmental management. This demonstrates that the Company is committed to environmental issues and is prepared to continue to work towards improving the environment.
