Vehicle Body and Paint Apprenticeship Level 3

Summary

“This Apprenticeship is about patching up damaged vehicles. From a scratched door to a dented bumper, accidents can affect a cars bodywork, mechanical parts and paint jobs. Body repair technicians fix the outside body of the car – they remove, repair and replace damaged panels, ensuring that the car is still sturdy and safe. Body refinishing technicians add the final surface touch by applying primers and paint so everything looks as good as new.” – National Apprenticeship Service

This apprenticeship is for people who want to become fully qualified in body repair and paint refinishing operations, and is a follow on course from the Level 2 Vehicle Body and Paint Apprenticeship.

In 2009, 100% of our vehicle body and paint operations apprentices were offered permanent positions by their employers once they had completed their apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship is a great way to gain a new qualification while staying in your current job and earning money. At the end of the course, you will have a nationally recognised qualification and no debts to pay!

Upon successful completion, you are a qualified vehicle body and paint operations technician and could work as body repair technician, body finishing technician, start your own business or teach.

In the future, you may be interested in continuing your apprenticeship studies through Cornwall College Business and enrol in the team leading, people management, vehicle maintenance and repair or vehicle parts and operations apprenticeship.

Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship is designed for people who want to train on the job and become fully qualified in vehicle body and paint operations.

You must enjoy working in the motor vehicle industry, have good practical skills and have a good eye to assess damage.

This is a follow on course from the Level 2 Vehicle Body and Paint Apprenticeship, and supports those working as a trainee body repair technician or a trainee body finishing technician.

Entry requirements

To enrol in this apprenticeship, you need to be aged 16 and over, ideally have a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade C level and be employed in a suitable trainee position.

You must have completed the Level 2 Apprenticeship or have the relevant experience.

Course overview

You will attend lectures at the Camborne campus 1 day per week for 2 years, while the remainder of the week is spent in the work place.

During this apprenticeship, you will build onto your level 2 certificate and have the opportunity to select a pathway to suit your job. You will choose from the following:

  • Body repair - remove, repair and replace body panels, realign the vehicle and check the body repairs
  • Paint refinishing - carry out refinishing operations, mix and match paint, and identify and repair paint defects on the vehicle

You will put together a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent at the tasks you do every day, while receiving support from Cornwall College tutors.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Body and Paint Operations
  • NVQ in Vehicle Body and Paint Operations
