This qualification is aimed at those wishing to enter employment or those already employed in a medical administrative/secretarial role, or general administrators wanting to pursue a more specialist career path. This will allow employees to excel in roles that are vital to ensuring the smooth administration of a busy GP's surgery or hospital department.
The level 2 Certificate aims to develop the learners' knowledge and understanding of the principles of medical administration including basic specialist terminology and give them the opportunity to develop the practical IT skills required to support the health care environment.
There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking these qualifications. All applicants will meet with the Course Manager to ascertain their suitability for the course and to make sure that they have the potential and the opportunity to successfully gain the qualification.
The candidate will study 4 mandatory units.
Candidates will develop personal and practical skills in how to communicate effectively with patients, visitors and members of the health service team and gain an understanding of hospital and general practice procedures, diary management, filing, the use of office equipment and IT.
Candidates will also develop an understanding of health and safety in the workplace and its impact on the working environment particularly with regard to the hazards relating to the medical field. They will also gain an understanding of and be able to correctly use a range of medical terms, develop an understanding of the principles of medical ethics and etiquette and confidentiality which are essential to fulfilling the role of the medical administrator/receptionist.
Learners are taught either in a classroom environment or through training as part of development in the workplace. The learner will be assessed by written question papers, assignments and a mini-portfolio of evidence depending on which units they take.
On completion of this course candidates may progress to the level 3 Certificate or Diploma for Medical Secretaries ; the level 3 Certificate in Medical Terminology or to another administration course such as the NVQ in Business and Administration. Candidates may also progress into employment in a variety of healthcare settings.
There will be additional fees payable for the OCR Text Processing (Business Professional) qualification.
