As an apprentice, your role will depend on your employer – you could be assisting customers on the sales floor of a high street store or handling their purchases. An apprenticeship is a great way to gain a new qualification while staying in your current job and earning money. At the end of the course, you will have a nationally recognised qualification and no debts to pay!
This apprenticeship can be tailored to suit your job role and industry; and covers a variety of areas including retail, beauty, pharmaceutical and food.
Upon successful completion, you are qualified to the level of a manager. If you work for a large organisation, you may find yourself progressing to middle management or working as a merchandise buyer.
In the future, you may be interested in continuing your apprenticeship studies through Cornwall College Business and enrol in the customer service, business administration, team leading, people management or leader management apprenticeships. Alternatively, you may be interested in the FdA Business or FdA E-business Management, followed by a BA (Hons) Business Enterprise through Cornwall College.

Who is this course for?
This apprenticeship is designed for people who want to train on the job and gain a nationally recognised advanced Diploma in Retail. The skills acquired in this apprenticeship are transferable to any job or industry, so it’s a good stepping stone in your career and may help you progress to a more senior position.
This is a follow on course from the Level 2 Retail Diploma, and supports a wide variety of job roles in any industry e.g. senior sales assistants, craft experts (bakery), style advisors (personal shoppers, retail consultants, stylist), visual merchandise supervisor, floor manager and store manager.
Entry requirements
To enrol in this apprenticeship, you need to be aged 16 and over, have a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade C (ideally in English and Maths) and be employed in a suitable supervisory position. You must have completed the Level 2 Retail Apprenticeship or have the relevant experience.

Course overview
This apprenticeship is work based, so you will receive training on the job for 1 year.
During this apprenticeship, you will build onto your Level 2 Certificate and have the opportunity to select units to suit your job role and industry. You will develop greater skills in sales and management, and may be responsible for staff and managing the shop you work in. This course can be tailored to your industry, so you could work in a bakery, fish shop, butchery, greengrocer, pharmacy or clothing store.
You will put together a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent at the tasks you do every day, while receiving support from experienced Cornwall College tutors.
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the following qualifications:
- Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Retail Skills
- Level 2 Certificate in Retail Knowledge
What's next?
With a Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills, you are qualified to the level of a manager. If you work for a large organisation, you may find yourself progressing to middle management or working as a merchandise buyer.
