Wood machinists prepare, cut and finish a variety of wood based products including chipboard, plywood and medium density fibreboard. The wood is used by bench joiners and site carpenters in the construction and furniture industries to make household goods or building materials e.g. doors, windows, desks and kitchen cupboards.
This apprenticeship is for people who want to become a qualified wood machinist, while laying the foundation for a successful career in the construction or wood related industries.

This apprenticeship is designed for people who want to train on the job and gain a nationally recognised qualification in wood machining.
You must have good practical and hand skills, be able to follow technical drawings accurately and have good attention to detail. This course supports those working as a trainee wood machinist.
To enrol in this apprenticeship, you need to be aged 16 and over, have a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade C and be employed within a suitable position.

You will attend lectures at the Camborne campus 1 day per week for 2 years, while the remainder of the week is spent in the workplace.
During this apprenticeship you will learn the correct methods for setting out joinery and using wood machines to current legislation. You will produce sawn, planed, profiled, jointed, sanded and bored timber, and timber based products using CNC/NC machines.
Depending on your job role and industry, you may have the opportunity to work on a variety of products e.g. desks, doors, stairs or floorboards.
You will put together a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent at the tasks you do every day, while receiving support from experienced Cornwall College tutors.
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the following qualifications:
With a Level 2 Diploma, you can start working towards the nationally recognised Level 3 Wood Machining Diploma by enrolling in the advanced apprenticeship. Thereafter, you could work as a wood machinist, CNC programmer, technician, quality assurance manager, supervisor, designer or teacher.
In the future, you may be interested in continuing your apprenticeship studies through Cornwall College Business and enrol in the team leading, people management, level 4 site supervision, carpentry and joinery or furniture making apprenticeship. Alternatively, the full time BTEC Diploma in Construction and Built Environment or the FdSc Sustainable Construction course may interest to you, both are offered by Cornwall College.
