Trowel Occupations Apprenticeship Level 3

Summary

This Advanced Trowel Occupations Apprenticeship is a follow on from the Level 2 Apprenticeship, and is for people who want to become a fully qualified craft mason while laying the foundation for a successful career in the construction industry.

An apprenticeship is a great way to gain a new qualification while staying in your current job and earning money. At the end of the course, you will have a nationally recognised qualification and no debts to pay!

Over 90% of our construction apprentices are offered permanent positions by their employers once they have completed their apprenticeship.

Upon successful completion, you are a fully qualified craft mason and may progress to a foreman or supervisory level in the future.

You may be interested in studying further and enrol in the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations, Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Site Supervision or FdSc Sustainable Construction. Thereafter you could progress to a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Construction Surveying, Building Surveying or Construction Management.

Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship is designed for people who are semi skilled in craft masonry and want to train on the job to become a fully qualified craft mason.

You must enjoy working in the construction industry and have good practical and hand skills.

This is a follow on course from the Level 2 Trowel Occupations Apprenticeship, and supports those working in a trainee trowel position.

Entry requirements

To enrol in this apprenticeship, you need to be aged 16 and over, ideally have a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade C and be employed within suitable position.  You must have a Level 2 Diploma in Trowel Occupations or have the relevant work experience.

Course overview

You will attend lectures at the Camborne, St Austell or Saltash campus for 1 day per week for 1 year. For practical tests, you will be required to complete a number of 1 week blocks at Cornwall College where you will build chimneys, obtuse angles and arches.

During this apprenticeship you will carry out structural and decorative brickwork, repair and maintain masonry structures and erect complex masonry structures. You will develop good communication skills and learn how to produce quotes for clients.

You will put together a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent at the tasks you do every day, while receiving support from experienced Cornwall College tutors.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations
  • Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying

The Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying can also be completed as a standalone course, without going through the apprenticeship program.

The Trowel Occupations course has been adjusted for the South West region where majority of work is in stone, not brick.

What's next?

With a Level 3 Diploma, you are a fully qualified craft mason and may progress to a foreman or supervisory level in the future.
