Summary

This Apprenticeship covers a range of skills that can be used across this vast sector. As an apprentice, your role will depend on your employer – you could be assisting customers on the sales floor of a high street store or handling their purchases. An apprenticeship is a great way to gain a qualification and earn real money. At the end of the course, you will have a nationally recognised qualification and no debts to pay!

This apprenticeship can be tailored to suit your job role and industry; and covers a variety of areas e.g. retail, beauty, pharmaceutical and food.

Upon successful completion, you are qualified to an assistants level and you may progress to a more senior position with more responsibility e.g. senior assistant, advisor, supervisor, team leader, manager. Thereafter you can start working towards the Level 3 Diploma, by completing the advanced apprenticeship.

In the future, you may be interested in continuing your apprenticeship studies through Cornwall College Business and enrol in the Customer Service, Business Administration, Team Leading, People Management or Leader Management apprenticeships. Alternatively, you may be interested in the FdA Business or FdA E-business Management, followed by a BA (Hons) Business Enterprise through Cornwall College.

Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship is designed for people who want to train on the job and gain a nationally recognised Diploma in Retails Skills. The skills acquired in this apprenticeship are transferable to any job or industry, so it’s a good course to kick start your career.

This apprenticeship supports a wide variety of job roles in any industry e.g. sales assistants, beauty consultants, customer service assistants, stockroom assistants, visual merchandiser and fresh food counter assistants in a bakery, fish shop or butchery.

Entry requirements

To enrol in this apprenticeship, you need to be aged 16 and over, have a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade C (ideally in English and Maths) and be employed in a suitable role.

Course overview

This apprenticeship is work based, so you will receive on the job training for 12 months.

During this apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to select units to suit your job role and industry. You may be involved in processing orders, providing counter service or putting together the company’s visual merchandise. This course can be tailored to your industry, so you could work in a bakery, fish shop, butchery, greengrocer, pharmacy or clothing store.

You will put together a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent at the tasks you do every day, while receiving regular tutorial support from experienced tutors from Cornwall College Business.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Retail Skills
  • Level 2 Certificate in Retail Knowledge

What's next?

With a Level 2 Diploma in Retail Skills, you are qualified to an assistant’s level and you may progress to a more senior position with more responsibility e.g. senior assistant, advisor, supervisor, team leader, manager.
