Case Study

Carpentry

“I’ve always wanted to be a Carpenter. Since I was young, I was always building things out of wood. Everyone at school was being pushed to do A levels but I wanted to be different and was nice to earn money at the same time,” said Colin.

Colin is a Carpentry apprentice employed by Truro School. The work he does for the school covers a wide range, from general repairs to building new structures. Colin said: “I enjoy the feeling of achieving something when you finish the job. The money is also a nice bonus! The apprenticeship has allowed me to get valuable hands-on, practical experience in the occupation I desired to do.”

Colin competed at Skillbuild in June 2009 and was the runner up for the South West region. He is competing again this year and hopeful to make it to the national finals in Wales.

Now that he has nearly completed his Site Carpentry NVQ3, Colin plans to go on to start a foundation degree in Sustainable Construction in September.
