Manufacturing Engineering Advanced Apprentice

Ben Moran joined Pall Corporation as a Manufacturing Engineering Apprentice when he was 18 in order to pursue his chosen career in engineering. In the last two years, Ben has developed and refined his engineering skills to an extremely high standard, and has had his achievements recognised with two awards at the recent Excellence in Business Training Awards, run by Cornwall College Business.

Ben’s apprenticeship has seen him study with industry experts at Cornwall College and in a supportive training workplace environment at Pall. Ben’s skills, dedication and commitment to training were recognised in front of 150 South West business professionals at the Newquay awards ceremony as he won, not only ‘Apprentice of the Year’, but also the converted ‘Winner or Winners’ award, an achievement usually bestowed upon a business as a whole.

Ben began his career as a Level 2 apprentice before progressing onto an advanced Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship which he is set to complete in September 2012. He was nominated for the award by Marie Harris, HR Manager at Pall Corporation, who recognises the benefits that apprenticeship training has brought to Pall as a company and to Ben as an individual.

Marie said, ‘Ben’s confidence whilst being on the apprenticeship has grown to such an extent that he has become a mentor to the new apprentices who have started with Pall.  His positive attitude towards training has been infectious and he has a real thirst for knowledge.’

Ben’s expertise was also recently recognised at the biggest skills competition in the world, the WorldSkills UK final. After a series of tough challenges, Ben was awarded first place over 1,000 other young people from around the country, by demonstrating his skills using a CNC (computer numerical control) milling machine.

Tamsyn Harris from Cornwall College Business judged the ‘Excellence in Business Training’ Winner of Winners Award and said: ‘Ben is an extremely focused, driven young individual who has really made an impact on his business. Pall Corporation has a long history of understanding the business benefits of staff training and in Ben they have found a star manager for the future.’
